In a striking endorsement, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, stating that his commitment to inclusive governance has allayed initial fears surrounding the Muslim-Muslim ticket of his administration.
Speaking after a National Executive Committee meeting in Kaduna, Northern CAN Chairman, Reverend Yakubu Pam, commended the President for embracing diversity and urged further steps toward religious balance in key leadership roles. Pam emphasized the importance of inclusivity but highlighted the enduring need for a Christian presence as Vice President to reflect Nigeria’s religious diversity.
“For us, inclusiveness is key, and we acknowledge that President Tinubu has shown a reasonable level of it.
However, balancing the Presidency with a Christian as number two would enhance harmony and equity,” Pam stated.
Pam also spotlighted the persistent insecurity and rising poverty across Northern Nigeria, calling for urgent action. “We appeal for a total state of emergency on insecurity.
Hunger and the skyrocketing cost of living are devastating our communities,” he added. Despite challenges, Pam admitted the administration has achieved some progress in reducing bombings and ensuring safety in certain regions.
During the meeting, which featured the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, CAN reiterated its commitment to national peace and development while advocating for greater efforts to combat marginalization of Christians in Northern Nigeria. The group also urged Nigerians to sustain prayers for peace and unity.
As President Tinubu tackles complex socio-economic issues, Northern CAN’s tempered optimism underscores a cautious hope for a more harmonious Nigeria.
The call for inclusiveness, stability, and economic relief remains central to the aspirations of millions across the region.
