Abuja, Nigeria— President Bola Tinubu today formally swore in Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. The event, which marked the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, underscores a key transition in Nigeria’s civil service leadership.
The appointment of Mrs. Walson-Jack, who has a distinguished career within the civil service, was approved by President Tinubu last month. This decision followed the anticipated retirement of the current Head of the Civil Service, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, who is set to retire on August 13, 2024.
President Tinubu, addressing the gathering of top government officials and dignitaries, praised Dr. Yemi-Esan for her exemplary service and expressed confidence in Mrs. Walson-Jack’s ability to steer the civil service in the right direction. “Mrs. Walson-Jack has proven herself a dedicated and capable leader within the service, and I have no doubt that she will continue to uphold the values and integrity that this position demands,” the President remarked.
Mrs. Walson-Jack’s journey to this pinnacle of civil service began when she was appointed as a Federal Permanent Secretary in 2017. Over the years, she has held critical roles in various ministries, where her leadership and administrative skills have earned her widespread respect.
Her experience spans key sectors of governance, providing her with the depth and breadth of knowledge required to lead the civil service at this crucial time.
Speaking after her swearing-in, Mrs. Walson-Jack expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this capacity and pledged her commitment to the ongoing reforms within the civil service.
“I am honored to be entrusted with this responsibility and will work tirelessly to build on the foundation laid by my predecessor. The civil service remains the backbone of our nation’s governance, and together, we will continue to enhance its efficiency and responsiveness,” she stated.
As Nigeria grapples with various economic and social challenges, the role of the Head of Civil Service remains pivotal in ensuring that government policies are effectively implemented.
Mrs. Walson-Jack’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by President Tinubu to strengthen the administrative machinery of the government, particularly at a time when the country is focused on delivering on its reform agenda.
