The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) launched its gubernatorial campaign in Edo State on Thursday with a vibrant rally at the Ubiaja Township Stadium in Esan South East Local Government Area. The event, which took on the atmosphere of a festive carnival, was attended by a large crowd of enthusiastic party supporters, signaling a strong start to the party’s election efforts.
The campaign was led by Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who passionately endorsed the PDP’s candidate, Idahosa Ighodalo. Speaking to the crowd, Governor Obaseki emphasized that his decision to back Ighodalo was based on his long-standing relationship with him, dating back 40 years to their university days.
Obaseki praised Ighodalo for his integrity, love for the people of Edo State, and his commitment to public service, asserting that Ighodalo’s candidacy is driven by a genuine desire to uplift the state rather than personal gain.
“Ighodalo is not in this race for fame or wealth; he already has those. He is here because he cares about the people of Edo State,” Obaseki stated. He further assured the attendees of Ighodalo’s capability, vowing that under his leadership, the state’s budget could rise to N1 trillion, thereby providing the necessary resources for transformative projects.
The rally also saw Ighodalo addressing the supporters, expressing his gratitude for their backing. He outlined his plans for the state, which include bolstering security and ensuring the safety of lives and property. His campaign manifesto, titled “The Pathway to Prosperity for All,” promises comprehensive development aimed at improving the quality of life for every Edo citizen.
Chief Tom Ikimi, a key party chieftain, highlighted the significance of the event being held in Esan land, reaffirming Ighodalo as the consensus candidate for the governorship. He called on the royal fathers in the state to rally behind Ighodalo, emphasizing the importance of unity in securing victory.
First Lady Betsy Obaseki also addressed the crowd, declaring that the time for Esan leadership in Edo State had arrived, dubbing it “Esan O’clock.”
She took a moment to criticize the All Progressives Congress (APC) for their choice of candidate, describing it as an insult to the people of Edo State. Her remarks were met with resounding approval from the crowd, further fueling the momentum of the PDP’s campaign.
