Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has immortalized his predecessor, the late Rotimi Akeredolu, by naming a new high court complex in his honor.
The facility, now known as the Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu Judiciary Complex, marks a significant milestone in the administration of justice in the state and serves as a tribute to the late governor’s visionary leadership in judicial reforms.
The announcement was made during the flag-off ceremony for the Judiciary Village on Friday in Akure, the state capital. Governor Aiyedatiwa described the project as a historic achievement and a long-overdue response to the state’s need for modern judicial infrastructure.
He acknowledged that since Ondo State’s creation in 1976, no substantial effort had been made to establish a comprehensive facility for the judiciary, a gap this project seeks to fill.
In his remarks, Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the initiative was not just an infrastructural milestone but also a fulfillment of Akeredolu’s aspirations for an efficient and accessible judicial system.
The late Akeredolu, who passed away on December 27, 2023, had laid the groundwork for the Judiciary Village during his administration. Known for his progressive policies and dedication to institutional reforms, Akeredolu championed the welfare of judicial officers and the modernization of justice delivery systems.
Governor Aiyedatiwa reiterated his commitment to carrying forward the blueprint set by his predecessor, stating that the project aligns with the administration’s goal of fostering a conducive environment for the judiciary to thrive. He stressed that the initiative was not born out of financial excess but rather a prioritization of justice and governance.
The judiciary complex will include state-of-the-art features such as a ceremonial court, modular courtrooms, a registry, a library, and exhibition halls, creating a functional and forward-looking judicial village. The project has been hailed as transformative, with many stakeholders expressing optimism about its potential to redefine the delivery of justice in Ondo State.
The Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Olusegun Odusola, praised the initiative as a landmark achievement, commending Governor Aiyedatiwa for prioritizing the judiciary and elevating its infrastructure to meet modern standards. He noted that the complex would inspire confidence in the legal system and enhance the efficiency of legal proceedings in the state.
However, the announcement has not been without controversy. While many have lauded the decision to honor Akeredolu, some critics, including the late governor’s widow, have raised questions about the sincerity of the gesture. In a recent public statement, she accused the government of using her late husband’s name for political purposes and alleged that the family was not consulted in the planning process.
She expressed her dissatisfaction with the state’s approach, suggesting that the tribute does not align with the values and legacy of Akeredolu. The criticism has sparked debates among stakeholders, with some viewing the initiative as a genuine acknowledgment of Akeredolu’s contributions, while others question the motives behind it.
Despite the mixed reactions, supporters of the project have highlighted its significance as a step toward addressing systemic challenges in the judiciary. Legal practitioners and civil society organizations have praised the development, emphasizing the importance of modern judicial infrastructure in ensuring timely and efficient justice delivery. For many, the judiciary complex represents progress and a testament to Akeredolu’s enduring influence on governance in Ondo State.
Governor Aiyedatiwa has defended the initiative, maintaining that it transcends political considerations and reflects a deep respect for Akeredolu’s legacy.
He described the judiciary complex as a symbol of continuity and a commitment to justice, governance, and public service. He urged stakeholders to view the project as a collective effort to honor a leader who devoted his life to the betterment of Ondo State.
Whether celebrated or critiqued, the Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu Judiciary Complex stands as a significant legacy that will influence the state’s legal and political landscape for years to come.
