The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported that 55,859 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been successfully collected across Ondo State in just five days, marking a significant milestone ahead of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 16, 2024. This robust turnout represents an exceptional 62.2 percent of the 89,777 PVCs available, showcasing heightened voter participation in the region.
The PVC collection exercise, which ran from October 17 to 21, took place in all 203 wards in Ondo State. INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, announced the figures in a statement. He expressed enthusiasm over the turnout, emphasizing that this collection marks the highest percentage achieved in such a short timeframe since the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) process was launched in 2015.
“This is a significant achievement for us,” Olumekun stated, applauding the citizens for their proactive approach to exercising their democratic rights. “Over this five-day period, the Commission made the PVCs available for collection, and we are thrilled that so many residents have taken the opportunity to ensure they are ready to vote.”
The PVC collection serves a dual purpose by allowing new registrants to pick up their cards while also accommodating individuals seeking transfers or replacements for lost or damaged cards, as stipulated by law. As the governorship election date draws nearer, INEC has urged residents to remain engaged and not miss their chance to be part of the electoral process.
In light of the high demand, INEC has extended the collection exercise to its local government area (LGA) offices in Ondo State. The extension is set to run from October 23 to October 29, 2024, and will be conducted daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, including weekends. Olumekun has advised potential voters to prioritize picking up their PVCs in person, reiterating the Commission’s policy that no cards will be collected by proxy.
“Detailed information on the locations of our LGA offices in the state is already available on our website,” he added, signaling a commitment from INEC to keep voters informed and engaged in the electoral process.
Historically, this level of participation is crucial for ensuring that a significant portion of the electorate is well-prepared and motivated to vote. Stakeholders, including political analysts and party representatives, have acknowledged the implications of this turnout. Increased voter registration and participation are essential not only for the legitimacy of the elections but also for fostering a culture of active citizenship in a democracy.
Political parties contesting the governorship election will undoubtedly be paying close attention to the figures. The turnout of registered voters could influence campaign strategies and voter outreach efforts. With the election date fast approaching, candidates will need to galvanize support by appealing to the concerns and needs of the electorate to ensure their own political survival.
The high PVC collection rate reflects a growing awareness among the populace about the importance of participating in the democratic process. As voters prepare for the Ondo governorship election, the optimism and determination displayed by residents could pave the way for a more inclusive and representative political landscape in the state.
As we approach the likelihood of one of the most crucial electoral exercises in recent history, Ondo State stands as a testament to the power of informed and engaged voters.
With community mobilization, awareness campaigns, and emphasis on the significance of each vote, the forthcoming governorship election promises to be a dynamic and closely watched event.
