As Ondo State approaches the highly anticipated 2024 elections, security and order have emerged as paramount concerns for the safety and integrity of the electoral process.
In a pivotal meeting held in Akure, AIG Abiodun Oladimeji Asabi, representing Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, addressed a diverse group of stakeholders, emphasizing the critical role of peace in securing a successful democratic exercise.

AIG Asabi’s message was clear: the upcoming elections mark a fundamental pillar of democracy, and the onus is on every participant—political parties, candidates, and supporters—to ensure a non-violent atmosphere.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, he announced the deployment of over 22,000 police officers across the state, a move in collaboration with other security agencies aimed at safeguarding voters, electoral officials, and sensitive materials.
This comprehensive security strategy is designed to counter any potential threats and ensure a seamless electoral process before, during, and after the elections.

“Elections are the bedrock of our democracy, and we must all commit to upholding peace,” AIG Asabi proclaimed. His emphasis on collaboration was a significant aspect of his address, calling on political entities to foster an environment of mutual respect and dialogue rather than confrontation.
“Let us avoid violence; let us follow democratic principles and strive for the common good,” he urged, underscoring the importance of unity in a politically diverse landscape.
The role of the media in this context was also highlighted, with AIG Asabi appealing to journalists to report responsibly. “Your words carry weight, and so does your responsibility to promote a narrative that upholds peace and harmony,” he stated, recognizing the influence media can have in shaping public perceptions and fostering an atmosphere conducive to peaceful elections.
The commitment of security agencies to a free, fair, and peaceful election was reaffirmed by AIG Asabi as he reflected on the successes of previous elections in the state.
“We have learned from past experiences, and we are better prepared this time to ensure that all citizens can exercise their voting rights without fear,” he said, instilling confidence in the electorate ahead of the crucial day.
As the election date draws near, the message of peace resonates strongly among various segments of society. Community leaders, civil society organizations, and ordinary citizens are urged to take active roles in promoting a peaceful electoral environment.
The cooperation of all stakeholders, from government officials to grassroots activists, is vital in assuring that Ondo State’s 2024 elections will reflect the will of the people without the shadow of violence.
In the face of Nigeria’s complex political landscape, AIG Asabi’s call for peace serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility that enables the flourishing of democracy.
The successful conduct of the upcoming elections can set a precedent for future electoral processes, fostering a culture of respect, order, and peace in Ondo State. As the spotlight intensifies on the electoral process, the hope remains that all actors will heed the call for peaceful engagement, allowing democracy to thrive.
