As Northern California sweltered under an oppressive heatwave, firefighters on Wednesday struggled to contain a fast-moving wildfire that has forced at least 26,000 people to flee their homes.
The Thompson Fire, which ignited just before noon on Tuesday, has rapidly spread over 14 square kilometers, sending a massive plume of smoke into the sky, visible even from space.
Located about 110 kilometers north of Sacramento, near the city of Oroville in Butte County, the fire has been a formidable opponent for firefighters. Crews have been working tirelessly to prevent the flames from reaching residential areas, lining roads with firebreaks and utilizing helicopters to drop water on the inferno.
Despite their efforts, as of Wednesday afternoon, there was no reported containment.
However, there was a glimmer of hope. Oroville Mayor David Pittman announced a “significant drop in fire activity” by the afternoon, expressing optimism that some residents might soon be able to return to their homes. “We’ve seen a considerable decrease in the fire’s intensity on the southern edge, and our crews are making progress on containment lines in the northern areas,” Pittman stated.
The steep terrain has caused additional challenges for firefighters, complicating efforts to build these critical containment lines.
The unrelenting heatwave has exacerbated the situation, making the air heavy with smoke and adding to the already arduous conditions faced by those battling the blaze.
Local authorities have emphasized the importance of evacuating when ordered, as the fire’s unpredictable behavior can lead to rapid changes in its path.
Evacuation centers have been set up to provide shelter and resources for displaced residents, who anxiously await news about the safety of their homes and communities.
The cause of the Thompson Fire remains under investigation, but officials are urging residents to stay vigilant and adhere to fire safety protocols.
