Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has declared a state of emergency regarding the nation’s crude oil production. This announcement was made by Mele Kyari, the CEO of NNPC, during the inaugural event of the 23rd edition of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition (NOG Energy Week) in Abuja on Tuesday.
Addressing industry leaders, stakeholders, and policymakers, Kyari while delivering a keynote analyzed the gravity of the situation facing Nigeria’s oil sector. “We have decided to stop the debate. We have declared war on the challenges affecting our crude oil production,” Kyari stated, his tone resolute and determined.
The NNPC CEO elaborated on the multifaceted challenges besetting Nigeria’s crude oil production, which have led to significant disruptions and declines in output. These challenges, according to Kyari, include sabotage, theft, technical issues, and underinvestment in infrastructure.
“We know what to fight. We know what we have to do at the level of assets. We have engaged our partners. And we will work together to improve the situation,” Kyari continued. His words reflected a clear strategy and a collaborative approach aimed at addressing and overcoming these hurdles.
Kyari emphasized that this “war” on production challenges is not a mere rhetorical stance but a strategic operation backed by concrete actions and the necessary tools. The NNPC has already mobilized resources and engaged with key partners in the oil and gas sector to ensure a coordinated and effective response.
The declaration of a state of emergency comes at a critical juncture for Nigeria, whose economy heavily relies on oil revenues. The ongoing challenges have not only affected production levels but also the broader economic stability of the country. The urgency in Kyari’s speech specified the immediate need for decisive action to stabilize and revitalize Nigeria’s oil production capabilities.
The 23rd edition of NOG Energy Week, held in the nation’s capital, served as a fitting backdrop for this pivotal announcement. The conference brought together experts and industry leaders to discuss and strategize on the future of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, making it an ideal platform for Kyari to rally support and cooperation from all stakeholders.
As the NNPC embarks on this aggressive campaign to tackle the production crisis, the industry and the nation at large will be watching closely to see the impact of these measures. The stakes are high, and the success of this initiative could significantly alter the trajectory of Nigeria’s oil sector and its economic future.
