In a thrilling final showdown on Wednesday, October 30, Nigeria’s U-20 team emerged victorious over Ghana, claiming the WAFU B Cup of Nations Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 win. The match, held under intense anticipation, saw Nigeria dominate early and secure their place at the top of West African football.
Nigeria’s charge began with an impressive first-half performance. Kparobo Arierhi set the tone, finding the net in the 33rd minute with a decisive strike that gave Nigeria the upper hand. Arierhi, displaying remarkable composure and skill, struck again just ten minutes later. Capitalizing on a loose ball within the penalty area, he drilled a shot into the top left corner, doubling Nigeria’s lead and leaving Ghana struggling to keep pace.
The first half belonged entirely to Nigeria. Ghana’s team, led by Desmond Ofei, faced a formidable challenge, entering the halftime break down by two goals. But the Black Satellites returned to the pitch with renewed determination, taking control of possession and pressing into Nigeria’s defensive lines. Their resilience paid off in the 75th minute when Jerry Afriyie, who had been a consistent offensive threat throughout the tournament, broke through. Afriyie connected with a well-placed cross and headed home his fifth goal of the tournament, breathing new life into Ghana’s hopes.
Despite Ghana’s late surge and a flurry of attempts to find an equalizer, Nigeria’s defense held firm, repelling Ghana’s offensive pushes with composure. As the final whistle sounded, Nigeria’s players erupted in celebration, lifting the coveted trophy and securing their dominance in the West African football scene.
Both Nigeria and Ghana’s performances earned them automatic qualifications for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, setting the stage for continued rivalry on the continental stage.
