The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an alert for a three-day weather forecast predicting a mix of sunshine, dust haze, and thunderstorms across the nation starting from Monday. As the country transitions into this weather pattern, residents are urged to remain vigilant and well-prepared for the conditions ahead.
In a detailed briefing released on Sunday, NiMet forecasts the northern region to experience a slight dust haze on Monday, with visibility expected to range from 2 to 5 kilometers throughout the day. This haze, a result of dust particles suspended in the air, poses potential health risks, especially for individuals with existing respiratory conditions. NiMet strongly advises those affected to take necessary precautions to safeguard their health during this period.
Meanwhile, the North Central region is projected to enjoy sunny skies but with a hazy atmosphere that could dampen outdoor activities. Residents in this region may enjoy the warmth of the sun intermixed with a shroud of dust that will linger throughout the forecast period.
The southern region, however, is expected to see a slightly different weather pattern. While predominantly sunny weather is anticipated, localized patches of clouds could bring light thunderstorms and rainfall, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours. Areas including Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states might experience these weather phenomena, leading to a mix of sun and rain that could influence daily routines.
Tuesday brings a slight shift, particularly in the northern region where moderate dust haze is anticipated, reducing visibility to under 1,000 meters. This could impact travel plans and outdoor events as the dust blankets the area. The North Central region will still contend with slight dust haze, while the southern states will continue to bask in the sunshine, albeit interrupted by possible thunderstorms and light rain in Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
By Wednesday, the forecast indicates persistent moderate dust haze over the northern part of the country, which may cause significant reductions in visibility. As in previous days, the North Central region will face slight dust haze.
The southern region will also see heightened chances of thunderstorms, particularly in Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, continuing the pattern of uncertainty with potential precipitation.
With such variations in weather patterns, NiMet urges airline operators to consult specific airport weather reports to avoid disruptions caused by visibility issues. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather developments through NiMet’s official website, nimet.gov.ng, ensuring they are prepared for any abrupt changes.
As Nigeria experiences this mix of weather, from sunny spells to dust haze and thunderstorms, communities are reminded to prioritize safety. With the potential hazards posed by air quality and weather conditions, staying alert and prepared will be key to navigating this period effectively.
