A non-governmental organizations known as the Touch of Love and Lifting Hands Foundation has urged the government to prioritize social welfare programs for the elderly and widows.
The organization made the call during it’s annual end-of-year celebration in Lagos.
The founder Dr. Atinuke Owolabi, a distinct humanitarian and philanthropist highlighted the urgent need for accessible healthcare, financial security, and collaborative efforts to support society’s most vulnerable.
The event, held in Ifako-Ijaye, marked the conclusion of a weeklong initiative dedicated to spreading love and care. Over 500 beneficiaries received essential items such as rice, garri, and condiments to brighten their Christmas celebrations. The atmosphere was lively, with music, games, and a strong sense of community.
“This is about more than just material support,” Owolabi said. “It’s about showing our elderly and widows that they are valued, supported, and not forgotten. Small acts of kindness can ripple into hope for those who need it most.”
She called on governments at all levels to collaborate with humanitarian groups like hers to extend their reach and create lasting change in underserved communities.
Owolabi emphasized the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by the elderly, particularly access to healthcare and financial stability.
The foundation’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed. The Akwa Ibom Community Ogba-Ikeja Lagos Chapter honored Owolabi with a Leadership and Visionary Award for her dedication and selflessness.
For 86-year-old widow Deborah Oyekanmi, the foundation’s generosity was life-changing. “God will bless them for remembering people like us,” she said, joining other beneficiaries in prayers for Owolabi and her team.
The weeklong event also included free medical screenings, health talks, empowerment training, and a thanksgiving service. Volunteers and donors played a crucial role, their generosity fueling the foundation’s mission.
“Let’s continue to work together to build a society where no one feels left behind, especially during festive seasons like Christmas and beyond,” Owolabi urged.
Her call for government action reflects a growing awareness of the need to uplift vulnerable populations. As the season of giving unfolds, the foundation’s efforts serve as a reminder of the power of compassion to transform lives and inspire change.
