The Federal Government has vowed to investigate the airstrike in Sokoto State that claimed the lives of 10 people in Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa villages in Silame Local Government Area.
Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, delivered this assurance during a condolence visit to Sokoto Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Friday.
In a statement released on Saturday by the governor’s spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, Matawalle emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and upholding the safety of all Nigerians.
Expressing regret over the tragic incident, he attributed the airstrike to erroneous intelligence received during a military operation targeting the notorious Lakurawa bandits who had dominated the area. Despite the mistake, he assured the public that justice would be served.
Matawalle condemned the activities of terrorists disrupting peace in the region and reiterated the government’s resolve to confront them decisively. He also praised Governor Aliyu for his proactive measures in tackling insecurity, noting that Aliyu was the only governor to request a military base in his state to bolster security efforts.
“The President, Bola Tinubu, is deeply concerned about this unfortunate incident and asked me to personally convey his condolences,” Matawalle stated, adding that the federal government would continue to provide the necessary resources and equipment to combat banditry in Sokoto State.
Governor Aliyu, in his response, called on the military to enhance its intelligence-gathering capabilities to prevent future incidents. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the military and other security agencies, praising their dedication to safeguarding the state. Aliyu also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his concern and Matawalle’s support in addressing the insecurity plaguing Sokoto.
Describing the airstrike as a tragic but avoidable mistake, Aliyu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa. He assured the affected communities that a comprehensive investigation would uncover the truth and provide closure to the bereaved families.
