The Federal Government has announced free train rides for Nigerians across all operational routes from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, to ease travel and promote convenience during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday, shortly after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja. According to the minister, the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to supporting citizens during the festive season, a period marked by increased travel and economic strain.
Idris stated that the free train services would cover all routes currently serviced by the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), ensuring that travelers heading to various destinations across the country can benefit from the gesture without financial burden.
He emphasized the government’s recognition of the need to make transportation more accessible and affordable for Nigerians, particularly as many face rising living costs.
The decision is expected to alleviate travel difficulties, which often peak during the holiday season due to heavy demand for transportation. It also aligns with ongoing efforts to improve rail infrastructure and encourage the use of railway services as a viable and cost-effective alternative to road travel.
“This initiative will provide Nigerians with an opportunity to travel home and celebrate with their loved ones without worrying about transport costs,” Idris said.
The announcement has been met with enthusiasm among Nigerians, many of whom have lauded the government for the timely intervention. For families planning reunions and festive celebrations, the free rides offer much-needed relief amid economic challenges.
Further details, including schedules and routes, are expected to be released by the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) in the coming days to help travelers plan their journeys effectively.
The government’s move to provide free transportation follows a broader push to enhance public infrastructure and services. It also aims to promote the use of rail transport, which has seen significant upgrades in recent years, with new routes and modernized trains enhancing efficiency and safety.
