Atiku Condemns President Tinubu’s Benue Visit as ‘Political Spectacle’ Amid Rising Insecurity
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue State, describing it as a “political spectacle” that fails to address the escalating insecurity in the region.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Atiku expressed disappointment that the President chose to engage in ceremonial activities while communities across Benue and other parts of the Middle Belt grapple with deadly attacks by armed groups.
“The President’s visit to Benue ought to have focused on the urgent security and humanitarian crisis, not a show of political strength,” Atiku said, stressing that displaced persons and victims of violence need real intervention, not rhetoric.
The visit, which included meetings with party stakeholders and local leaders, was part of Tinubu’s broader tour to shore up political support ahead of the 2027 elections. However, Atiku argued that the President’s actions were “insensitive to the plight of suffering Nigerians.”
Benue has been one of the hardest-hit states by banditry and farmer-herder clashes, leading to the displacement of thousands and widespread destruction of farmlands.
Atiku called for “genuine leadership” and urged the federal government to prioritize the safety and welfare of citizens over politics.
No official response has yet been issued by the presidency.
