In a recent statement, Oluomo Sunday Akere, a key figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Commissioner for Information in Osun State, has emphasized that the party’s focus on zoning its 2026 gubernatorial ticket to the West Senatorial District is contingent upon the decision of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.
Speaking to journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, Akere, who previously served as Special Adviser to Oyetola on Political Affairs, articulated the party’s viewpoint on the upcoming election in what appears to be a strategic positioning for the APC.
Akere conveyed his respect for Oyetola, stating, “I need to quickly let you know that the APC is a party with discipline and tradition, not only here in Osun but the entire nation.
We realize fully that former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has the right of first refusal for the governorship ticket for 2026, and that decision is entirely his to take.” This assertion reflects the party’s acknowledgment of Oyetola’s significant influence and popularity within the party and the state.
The political landscape in Osun state is heating up, with Akere making it clear that if Oyetola chooses not to seek re-election, the APC will shift its focus to candidates from the West Senatorial District.
“If the Minister decided not to run, then our party would focus on Osun-West senatorial district for a candidate,” Akere stated, hinting at the potential candidates who may emerge if the zone is favored.
Highlighting the depth of talent within the APC, Akere asserted the party’s strength across all three senatorial districts in Osun. “You should also understand that the APC in Osun State today has credible personalities who can pick its ticket and deliver victory come 2026 against Governor Ademola Adeleke, that is a certainty,” he claimed, exuding confidence in the party’s prospects.
Critically, Akere voiced strong opinions on Governor Adeleke’s performance, accusing him of mismanaging state resources and neglecting important issues while prioritizing social events.
“Adeleke has wasted the state resources on frivolities; he hardly spent three weeks in the state. Important state matters that call for attention are always treated with levity,” Akere remarked.
He pointed to a specific incident to illustrate his viewpoint, noting the absence of Adeleke during the state burial of the late Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, an event attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other dignitaries.
“Can you imagine an indigen of the state being given a State burial where the President and Commander in Chief led the entire paraphernalia of the Nigerian nation, only for the Governor to be nowhere to be found? All these reckless kicks and starts attending state affairs must end by 2026, God helping us,” Akere insisted.
The growing discontent with the current administration has prompted many APC members to rally their support for a more focused approach to governance. Akere’s comments resonate with a party eager to reclaim its position in the state and demonstrate leadership that addresses the concerns of its constituents.
As the APC gears up for the 2026 governorship election, the dynamics around Oyetola’s potential candidacy and the fallout of Adeleke’s leadership will undoubtedly shape the political landscape in Osun State.
With Akere’s declarations, the stage is set for an intense political battle, emphasizing the need for effective governance and strategic decision-making in the months ahead.
