The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has announced the release of Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode after eleven harrowing days in captivity. The priest was freed late Wednesday evening, on November 6, 2024, in a rural area near Ajaokuta, Kogi State. This announcement has brought a sigh of relief to the Diocese and the countless individuals who have been praying for his safe return.
Rev. Fr. Oyode was abducted on October 27, 2024, during a violent raid on the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary located in Ivhianokpodi-Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The attack occurred as priests and seminarians participated in their evening prayers and Benediction, leaving the community shaken and fearful.
The Director of Communications for the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, confirmed Oyode’s release and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support from both local and international communities during the crisis.
“The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunia, expresses gratitude to all for the prayers and moral support received during the eleven days Fr. Thomas Oyode was held captive,” Egielewa stated in an official release.
The Bishop also took this opportunity to issue a stark warning regarding the worsening security situation in Edo North Senatorial District and across Edo State.
He called on government authorities at all levels to take immediate and proactive measures to ensure the safety of citizens. “People must be able to return to their normal peaceful lives in their homes, on their farms, and while travelling,” he implored.
The release of Fr. Oyode comes amid growing concerns over the rise of abductions in Nigeria, which have instilled fear within communities, especially targeting religious and educational establishments.
The Catholic Church has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security protocols to protect its clergy and congregants from the increasing threat of violence.
As the Diocese rejoices over the safe return of its priest, the broader conversation around security and community safety in Nigeria continues to gain momentum. The faithful remain hopeful that proactive measures will soon be implemented to avoid such distressing incidents in the future.
