Dr. Doyin Okupe, a prominent Nigerian physician and political figure, passed away on March 7, 2025, at the age of 72. His death was attributed to a prolonged battle with cancer.
Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Okupe pursued a career in medicine before transitioning into politics. He co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Lagos and served as its Managing Director. His political journey included roles as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) during the Third Nigerian Republic and as a senior adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
In 2022, Okupe was appointed Director-General of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign under the Labour Party for the 2023 election. He stepped down following a conviction for money laundering. After the election, Okupe resigned from the Labour Party and became an outspoken supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Okupe had a history of health issues, including prostate cancer diagnosed 16 years ago and sarcoma in his right shoulder. In October 2023, he was hospitalized for prostate cancer and sought treatment in Israel, but his condition did not improve as hoped.
Dr. Doyin Okupe’s contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape spanned several decades, marked by his roles as a medical professional and political adviser. He is survived by his family and is remembered for his dedication to public service.
