Residents of Ijo-Mimo High School at Ijoka Road in Akure, are expressing profound gratitude following the successful completion of the first phase of a long-awaited road project spearheaded by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The community, which has long faced challenges due to inadequate infrastructure, is now witnessing a renaissance that has rekindled hopes of greater connectivity and accessibility.
The day was marked by celebration and jubilation as locals gathered to welcome a team from the NDDC, led by the Executive Director of Corporate Services, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde. The visit coincided with the official unveiling of the newly completed road, which is expected to dramatically improve the quality of life for residents who have faced persistent difficulties due to poorly maintained roads. With this project, the NDDC is not only alleviating transportation woes but is also signaling a commitment to developing the region.
For many years, the people of Ijo-Mimo felt isolated, almost cut off from the rest of Akure despite being located within its metropolis. The challenges posed by the prior lack of infrastructure led to a myriad of social problems, including high rates of crime and limited economic opportunities. Armed robbery, once a frequent occurrence, became a dark cloud over the community.
However, with the introduction of solar street lights by Hon. Abegunde less than 18 months prior, residents have begun to feel a sense of safety and security; the completion of the road project now brings an additional boost of optimism.
“We have always been in darkness, not just figuratively but literally,” remarked a local resident who wished to remain anonymous. “Abena has brought light to our lives with solar street lights and now this beautiful road project. It gives us hope for a better future and a safer community.”
The project has been lauded not just for its physical transformation of the area, but for the ease it will bring to the daily lives of the residents. While speaking Hon. Abegunde emphasized the board’s commitment during his visit, pledging that the NDDC will reach every corner of the state and prioritize the needs of its residents. “Our mission is to ensure that every nook and cranny of Ondo State benefits from the development initiatives we introduce,” he stated, receiving cheers from the gathered crowd.
