Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has officially launched the construction of the 20-kilometer Obajana-Uro-Aku rural road, a significant infrastructure project designed to enhance connectivity and stimulate rural economic growth. The road, which links parts of Lokoja and Adavi local government areas, forms part of a larger 65-kilometer network aimed at boosting agricultural activities in the state.
This ambitious initiative is part of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), supported by the World Bank and other stakeholders within the agricultural value chain. The project aims to improve access to farms, rural communities, and markets, ensuring food security and reducing transportation costs for farmers. The Obajana-Uro-Aku road marks the first phase of this broader development plan.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held in Apata near Obajana, Governor Ododo emphasized the importance of rural roads in his administration’s development strategy. He noted that improved transportation infrastructure is essential not only for economic growth but also for enhancing food security across Kogi State. “These rural roads are not just pathways for vehicles,” the governor stated, “they are lifelines for farmers, traders, and communities. By improving access to markets and reducing the cost of transportation, we are empowering our rural population to contribute to the state’s agricultural and economic development.”
Governor Ododo called on the benefiting communities to take ownership of the project, stressing that local involvement is key to its success. He also issued a stern warning to contractors involved in the construction, urging them to adhere to the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. “There will be no room for diversion of project funds,” he said, “and we expect nothing less than timely and high-quality delivery.”
The State Commissioner for Rural and Energy Development, Engineer Abdulmutalib Mohammed, highlighted the benefits of the road for the state’s farmers, explaining that it will significantly reduce the cost of transporting goods and improve access to agricultural markets. “This project is designed to make life easier for our farmers and traders,” Mohammed said. “By cutting down transportation costs, we ensure that farmers can bring their goods to market more efficiently, which ultimately boosts the local economy.”
The RAAMP National Coordinator, Engineer Aminu Bodinga, represented by Mrs. Joy Amadi, commended Governor Ododo’s commitment to rural development, noting that the road will open up new opportunities for rural dwellers. “Access to markets and social services is critical for rural communities,” she said, “and this project will help bridge the gap between isolated areas and economic opportunities.”
Traditional leaders from the benefiting communities also praised the governor’s initiative. The Olu of Oworo, Muhammed Adoga Baiyerohi, remarked that the road would not only promote agricultural growth but also ease vehicular traffic on the busy Obajana road, making it a win-win for both rural and urban residents.
Governor Ododo’s administration has continued to demonstrate a strong commitment to rural development, and the Obajana-Uro-Aku road project is poised to make a lasting impact on Kogi State’s agricultural and economic landscape.
