As Edo State prepares for its crucial governorship election on Saturday, September 21, 2024, former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has called on citizens and political stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process. In a public statement, Jonathan emphasized the need for citizens of voting age to turn out and exercise their democratic rights while urging political actors to respect the rule of law and prioritize the state’s peace and security.
The former president stressed that politicians must pursue their interests within the confines of the law, warning that activities aimed at undermining the peace and stability of the state could have dire consequences. He noted that Nigeria’s Fourth Republic has seen the endurance of civil rule for 25 years, but this progress could be eroded if citizens are not allowed to make free and fair political choices.
Jonathan further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to uphold their constitutional responsibilities by ensuring neutrality and professionalism during the election. He emphasized that the conduct of these institutions would significantly impact the credibility of the election, urging them to maintain a level playing field for all participants.
“Security agencies must conduct themselves with optimal neutrality and desist from actions that could compromise the credibility of the electoral process,” Jonathan stated. He added that INEC must inspire confidence by overseeing a transparent voting process to avoid political disputes, voter apathy, and social unrest that could follow a flawed election.
The former president also highlighted the importance of a credible leadership recruitment process, free from manipulation, to ensure the selection of leaders capable of delivering good governance, peace, and prosperity. He concluded by reminding Nigerians that the integrity of the electoral process is vital for the continued consolidation of democracy in the country.
As Edo State approaches the election, all eyes will be on the performance of INEC and security agencies in safeguarding the democratic process and ensuring a peaceful transition of power.
