In response to the looming threat posed by the impending release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam, the Taraba State government has proactively established a flood control team across all 168 wards of the state. This strategic initiative was announced by Governor Agbu Kefas during a media briefing at Government House in Jalingo on Saturday. The governor emphasized that the newly formed team would focus on emergency management and implement preventive measures to safeguard the state’s residents from the devastating effects of flooding.
Governor Kefas highlighted the gravity of the flooding issue in Taraba, stating, “Our state is facing significant challenges due to flooding, affecting the lives and livelihoods of many of our citizens. In response, we are committed to finding lasting solutions to these challenges, working closely with experts and communities to mitigate the impact of flooding on our people.”
The flood control initiative is part of a broader strategy under the Taraba Development Master Plan 2023-2050, which outlines a comprehensive approach to sustainable development in the state. Governor Kefas underscored the importance of completing legacy road projects, which he believes will boost economic activities, create jobs, and reduce poverty across the state.
“Since I assumed office as your governor, I have been driven by one purpose: the well-being and prosperity of every citizen of Taraba,” Kefas remarked. “Our administration has focused on policies and projects designed to uplift our communities, strengthen our economy, and secure a brighter future for all.”
In addition to flood control, the governor’s agenda includes free and compulsory education, significant investments in the health sector, and enhanced security measures. Kefas stressed the importance of collaboration with the military, security agencies, traditional institutions, and neighboring states, including Cameroon, to achieve these goals.
Governor Kefas also reiterated his commitment to granting full autonomy to local government councils in line with the Supreme Court ruling and pledged to implement the federal government’s minimum wage decision to improve the welfare of civil servants in the state.
As Taraba State marks its 33rd anniversary, Governor Kefas called on residents to unite with a collective determination to build a prosperous future, emphasizing that the administration’s efforts are geared towards ensuring the well-being and prosperity of all citizens.
